Names with stories: The story of Earth.com

On Earth day let’s take some time to look at the story behind this emblematic domain name - EARTH.COM.

On Earth day let’s take some time to look at the story behind this emblematic domain name - EARTH.COM.

EARTH.COM was first register on June 05, 1994, so today the domain is 25 years old.

In 1997 there was a website launched on the domain, looking like this:

The site owner, Tony Sanders who had a company Berkeley Software Design, Inc., was a tech guy interested in interests include aviation; beer (esp dark ale); cats; caving; climbing.

This is how he described his use of Earth.com:

"Earth.com is my personal domain. It is hosted out of Colorado Springs, CO although I do not live in the Springs anymore. I use it for an email address and running mailing lists and various web sites that I have a personal interest in. Stuff doesn't get updated here as often as I would like but real work comes first... Earth.com is NOT an ISP; contrary to a lot of mail I get from people insisting otherwise."

The site didn’t change much over the years until it seems to have dropped at the end of 2004.

The first recorded sale of the name was in 2005 when it sold for US$ 800,000. As DN Journal covered back then:

Earth.com and Sharks.com were purchased by the same buyer in a pair of private transactions involving two different sellers. InnovationHQ Inc., in conjunction with DnStrategy.com and Logicbank LLC made the blockbuster acquisitions. Cameron Johnson of InnovationHQ.com and DnStrategy.com, who acquired the domains in tandem with Seraphim Marcopoulos of Logicbank LLC, said "We're thrilled to grab these two terrific premium names! The road to actually landing these domains was filled with high stakes drama, and Seraphim was instrumental in helping us secure them. "

After that Earth.com was listed for sale on Sedo.
In 2010 the design was changed to a blog about Earth Day and related news

The social media accounts for twitter and Facebook with the handles @earthdotcom for twitter and @earth.com for Facebook were created. The blog design changed over time.

Up until August 2016, the whois details for the domain pointed to innovationhq.com so we can safely assume they continued to own the name until then.
In 2016 the domain name seems to have changed hands and the Earth.com that we know now was launched.
